Walk in the Woods - Sept 10, Mannington, WV

There will be a Walk in the Woods outside of Mannington on Saturday, September 10 starting at 10 am. Mike Sieber will lead a tour of his property in the morning. A light lunch will be served at 12:30 pm.

The Siebers have owned their property for 40 years. They’ve planted thousands of trees including butternut, dug frog ponds, grown ginseng, created snags, restored forest roads, and built a barn from lumber produced by their forest. These are just a few of the things they've done to enhance their woodland for themselves and the wildlife that live there. The tour will include some uphill walking but will not be strenuous.

To register for the tour or for more information, contact Ellen Voss at 304-293-5741 or evoss@mix.wvu.edu. Visit http://wvstewards.ning.com for a list of additional forest-related events.

The Forest Stewardship Program offers private woodland owners technical and financial assistance to maintain and enhance the value of their forested land. Assistance is available to improve soil and water quality, wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, aesthetics, protection of endangered species, management of invasive species, and timber and wood product potential, while ensuring the forest's capacity for self-renewal. The WV Division of Forestry manages the program, with assistance from WVU Extension Service and WVU Division of Forestry & Natural Resources.

If you are interested in earning volunteer hours, please let me know at your earliest convenience and I’ll send you more details.
