Tuesday, August 23: This is Chris Linton's Dawn's Breaking Light Paddle! We will launch our boats from the Star City Boat Ramp at 6:00 a.m. (yup - early!). We will paddle into the sunrise to the new Van Voorhis Launch, then return. Those interested can enjoy breakfast at Terra Café after. Trip length 5.8 miles round trip, abt. 3 hours. You will need to bring lights for front and back of your boat to start out, and a headlamp is also useful. Flashlights can suffice. Fine weather in the forecast.
Wednesday, August 24: Mon River from Opekiska south, toward Prickett's Fort, and back, abt. 5 miles round trip (2.5-3 hours). Meet just above the Opekiska Lock, ready to paddle at 10:00 a.m. Beautiful day is forecast - sunny, light wind, morning temps in 60's, high 82! Finally, comfortable weather!!
Directions to Opekiska: Take Goshen Road Exit of I-79. Head over to Rt. 73/Smithtown Road, a right turn coming from north. Turn left (south) onto Rt. 73. Go for several miles until you reach Smithtown. Opekiska Rd. will be a right hand turn there. [Do NOT take the intersecting Opekiska Ridge Rd.] Go to the end of Opekiska Rd., abt. 3 miles, to the parking areas near the Opekiska Lock and Dam. You will see some quite extravagant homes along here, and go back and forth over White Day Creek, a nice drive.
After this outing, we MAPers will have paddled the entire West Virginia section of the Monongahela River (except for a tiny piece in downtown Morgantown) - 38 miles since last October, and many sections more than once.
Saturday, August 27: Tentative trip (weather permitting) on the Blackwater River headwaters into the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. All flatwater, beautiful stream, lots of meanders through lovely wild land. If it is a go, which I will know early next week, we will plan to meet at the Shop n Save in Davis, WV (abt. 1.5 hours from Morgantown). From there we will caravan to the put-in off Camp 70 Road (mainly dirt road, but easily drivable). We will paddle upstream first, then back, 3-4 hours round trip, having lunch on the way. We can eat dinner at Siriani's Italian Restaurant in Davis - great food and atmosphere - before heading home.
I will need to know if you are planning on going on the Blackwater outing so we will know whom we are meeting in Davis.
